Chennai Hope Festival Prepares to Reach Over 100,000 People Sponsored by East-West’s Institute for Emerging Itinerant Evangelists (IEIE)
East-West has a new ministry opportunity on the horizon for 2009–2010. We have partnered with the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association (BGEA) to train 50 Indian evangelists in preparation for the Chennai Hope Festival. This large evangelistic festival will be held in Chennai, India, from January 21–24, 2010. Franklin Graham, the son of renowned evangelist Billy Graham, will preach at the festival.
East-West is already actively training nationals to follow up and perform discipleship with those who will accept Christ at the festival. We expect over 100,000 people to attend this event in Chennai. Our prayer is that tens of thousands of people will accept Christ through the festival and as a result of the evangelists’ follow-up visits.
The national evangelists and the leaders of the IEIE, including Vice President John Adams, recently met at the St. Thomas Retreat Center in Chennai to discuss plans for the festival. John says, “We have only a few months left to prepare for the festival with Franklin Graham. Our goals are to teach our evangelists how to evangelize more effectively, to train them for follow-up, and to help them develop strong preaching points that will be used prior to and during the festival.”
He continues, “Here we are in a land of a billion people, fewer than 3% of whom are Christians. I have the amazing privilege of working with motivated and Spirit-filled evangelists as they prepare to lead others to the Savior. Please pray for India. Pray for the festival in January. Pray for each of our evangelists as God inspires and equips them through this institute. Thanks so much for your support so that we can do this eternal work.”
Johnson, an East-West-supported national evangelist in India, has held two small crusades recently in preparation for the Chennai festival. He has been encouraged by improvement in his preaching content, as well as by his audiences’ increased response to the Gospel.
